Great River Road Run

Each year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, hundreds of fleet feet descend upon Illinois' Great River Road to work off the holiday calorie uptick. Is it an organized "race" with clocks and timers and officials in neon vests? Yes. But the spirit here is much more, "Hey, let's go for a run!" than, "Dude, your ass is grass!" (Consider the fact that the Great River Road Run begins at a very reasonable 10 a.m.) Beginning and ending on East Broadway in downtown Alton, the route covers ten miles — five miles down and back up the ubër-gorgeous Great River Road, with its winding slopes yielding to striking bluffs. So popular is this "race" that it's been organized for each of the past 50 years! That said, registration usually doesn't begin till fall. Watch the Great River Road website as the holidays approach, or call 618-259-2261 for more information.
