The Dive Bars of Alton
As it turns out, there are two types of strip joints on the east side. The first are those neon dens in Sauget, Washington Park and Brooklyn that leave no doubt you'll see Live Nude Girls. That is what you pay for via the cover charge at the door. Which brings us to the lesser-known joints located on and off the main drag of Alton. These dive bars don't advertise as strip clubs, and technically, they're not. But stick around for a few beers and wait. Chances are good that the scantily clad barmaid will soon be lifting her top in gratitude to the locals buying her shots and plying her with dollar bills. True, you're not guaranteed to see nudity at these "strip joints" — but isn't the thrill of the unknown always more fun than a sure thing?
