South Grand Boulevard between Arsenal Street and Gravois Avenue was once the crucible of Southeast Asian cuisine in St. Louis. Much of the action has since moved from the city proper into the county, but since it opened in early 2008, Basil Spice has given the South Grand business strip a new vibrancy. The preparations are meticulous, the flavors bright, the spice — if you prefer — cranked up to a sweat-inducing five stars. The classic Thai curries and pad noodle dishes are excellent, but the house specialty might be the seafood dishes: Pla song kruang is a knockout, a deep-fried trout fillet paired with apple and red onion. Whatever you order, you will be surprised that a stretch of Thai and Vietnamese restaurants so well traveled can still offer something new — and winning.
