Knitters in general are crazy about color. They obsess over it. They blog about it. They need to manipulate it in the form of yarn as often as possible. Knitty Couture owner Thi Miller has a background in psychology, so she makes the most of this mania: Open the door of her stylish shop in the Delmar Loop and you enter a kaleidoscope. Walls are painted in turquoise and tangerine, and those vivid backdrops highlight vibrant swags of wool, mohair, soysilk and more. There's a floor-to-ceiling display of the popular Cascade 220, in virtually every shade the company offers; more soft, squeezable rainbows fill a pair of old oaken barrister bookshelves; crannies stuffed with amazing psychedelic sock skeins swirl across your retinas. Comfortable chairs invite you to sit, soak in the sights and knit, as you chat about cast-on projects with the eclectic clientele. Classes and fun events such as "yarn tastings" (food and wine paired with new fiber brands) are offered; check out the shop's well-designed website for info. When she opened in 2007, Miller's goal was not only to sell top-quality supplies, but also to foster a creative space where knitters could just hang out, show off their work and share their knowledge. She has succeeded!
