Winslow's Home has the feel of an earlier era — a happier, healthier time when the poached eggs on special were freshly plucked from a backyard coop and accented with fresh herbs just harvested from the garden. Honest, delicious food. Cheerful chitchat. A place to linger. The cozy storefront that Ann Sheehan Lipton selected for her eco-friendly market and eatery was a general store when it was built back in 1926, and the chef she installed, Cary McDowell, is a gent with a bent toward both technique and tradition. His breakfast specials (which change regularly) are first a feast for the eyes, a cascade of color coming from the seasonal fruits and vegetables he deploys to punch up oatmeal, pancakes and eggs. We like the fact that McDowell sources from local growers and that his scones and muffins are baked on-site every morning. In the warmer months patio seating is a plus. But no matter the weather, it's a good bet McDowell will throw a smile or wave your way from the kitchen when he sees you at the counter.
