Martin Duggan

After 22 years moderating Donnybrook — the combative roundtable discussion show on KETC-TV (Channel 9) — Martin Duggan, age 89, has passed the baton. But that doesn't mean the old man's checked out of public life: A lifelong Christian conservative, he recently endorsed Republican Ed Martin's bid for Congress. Duggan served as a Marine in World War II, then rose through the ranks at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat to become head of the editorial page in the '70s and '80s. Inspired by The McLaughlin Group, he founded Donnybrook in 1987. The show became an institution, with memorable verbal tussles between Duggan, Riverfront Times founder Ray Hartmann and St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bill McClellan. The world has greatly changed since Duggan began his journalism career 71 years ago. "We were so anti-communist at the Globe-Democrat," he said while filling in last June for Donnybrook's new host, Charlie Brennan, "I can't bring myself to say, 'globedemocrat.com.'"
