Why does St. Louis love Hammerstone's? Because Hammerstone's loves St. Louis. For more than a decade, this Soulard institution has been the place to eat, drink and be merry like a local. It's a well-worn and well-loved bar that wears its personality proudly. Although known for its large, fair-weathered patio and infamous annual Mardi Gras celebration, Hammerstone's happy hour is what keeps us coming back day after day. Monday through Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. (yes, five whole hours), you can get 50 cents off all wells, drafts and bottle beers and $1 off Smithwick's and Guinness. Now before you scoff at that seemingly small discount, remember that Hammerstone's would never overcharge you in the first place — leaving happy-hour drink prices around $1.50 to $3.50, a steal in light of the bartenders' loving pours. There's also a menu of $5 pub grub that includes chili-cheese fries so meaty and cheesy that every bite is a flavor battle between beef and spud for delicious domination of your mouth. Because no St. Louisan can pass up a great bar, it can get crowded, but the patrons are both social and friendly. With cheap drinks, hot food and good people, there's no possible reason to be unhappy at Hammerstone's.
