Best Jazz Radio Program St. Louis 2010 - Jazz Unlimited

With WSIE (88.7 FM) eliminating local hosts in favor of syndicated programming and Don Wolff's weekend jazz broadcast going Internet-only after the sale of KFUO (99.1 FM), Dennis Owsley's Jazz Unlimited is the longest-running jazz radio program in St. Louis. Airing Sundays from 9 p.m. to midnight on KMWU (90.7 FM), where Owsley has done a jazz broadcast of some sort since the early 1980s, Jazz Unlimited covers a commendably wide range of styles and subgenres, from traditional and swing to contemporary and avant-garde. The music is enhanced, but never overshadowed, by smart commentary and historical context provided by the host, whose book City of Gabriels: The History of Jazz in St. Louis, 1895–1973 remains the definitive work on its subject.
