August: Osage County
Theater doesn't get any more enthralling than Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize-winning drama August: Osage County, which detonated on the Fox stage for two weeks this past March. August was a far holler from the typical musical fare the Fox usually presents. This booking was yet another example of Mike Isaacson, vice president of programming for the venue, bringing a play to town not because it might turn a profit (which surely it did not) but because great theater deserves to be seen. August: Osage County was a serious, hard-hitting drama, beautifully acted by an ensemble led by Estelle Parsons in the role of her career. To see it was to be reminded of why we go to the theater. Thanks, Mike, for making that happen. Most people probably don't think of St. Louis as a breeding ground for theater producers. But we groomed David Merrick, who dominated Broadway in the 1950s and '60s. Then there was the brash Rocco Landesman, who has currently moved his address to Washington, D.C., as head of the National Endowment for the Arts. Now, Isaacson. But unlike his two prolific predecessors, Isaacson does not seem eager to move east. With one leg firmly entrenched in the Big Apple, more than anyone else he personifies the hope for a bright theater future here in St. Louis.
