This past winter Blick Art Materials' St. Louis outpost relocated from Clayton to new premises in the Delmar Loop. The move was a good one: The old space was crammed almost to bursting with pencils and paints and portfolios. The new store is open and bright, with wide aisles full of things to look at, whether you're a serious artist who knows how to deploy all the accouterments for oil painting, a shopper seeking a creative gift (with beautiful wrapping) or a crafter just looking for a fun project to fill an afternoon. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and always willing to help. Also helpful is Blick's preferred-customer program, free for students and teachers, which gives members 10 percent off all purchases. Being an artist isn't cheap, so it's nice that Blick is trying — in its own small way — to help out.
