A relatively new sport, as far as these things go, disc golf is rapidly gaining popularity. In St. Louis alone there are more than eighteen courses. One of the most popular and challenging is housed in Jefferson Barracks Park, only twenty minutes from downtown in Mehlville. The course boasts eighteen holes, with three tees each and three rotating pin placements. Home to the St. Louis disc-golf team the River City Flyers, the course tests newbies and veterans alike with steep hills, heavily wooded areas and thick brush running through the holes, obstructing even the most talented throws of the disc. If the contest is going well, players can celebrate at the turn with beverages from the strategically placed convenience store only a few feet away. Other advantages to playing in a large, historic park: The game becomes infinitely more memorable when you have visions of Civil War reenactments strolling around nearby or an El Monstero concert providing a evening soundtrack.
