Best Pie St. Louis 2011 - Eckert's Country Store and Farms
Eckert's can be a little overwhelming, especially on a Saturday during apple season. It's very tempting just to fill a plastic string bag with apples as quickly as possible (maybe taking a few moments to lift a small child so she can feel like she has contributed to the enterprise) and scoot home. But you'd be seriously remiss if you didn't drop in at Eckert's Country Store or Eckert's Country Restaurant and grab yourself a pie. The crust is crisp, flaky and baked to perfection. Sometimes they gussy up the apples with caramel and walnuts, and it's sublime. There is, of course, the problem of what to do with the fruit you just picked if you can't make a pie. Have you not heard the dictum about the health benefits of an apple a day? We're sure you'll think of something.
