Map & Details>>

The name "World Bird Sanctuary" makes this place sound like a too-obvious winner for this category — if only it weren't the most obvious place you've never heard of. Located on the outskirts of the city in what is technically Valley Park, the 305-acre sanctuary was founded in 1977 by an ornithologist in league with the Saint Louis Zoo. Focused firmly on increasing the statistical health of breeds with dwindling numbers, the World Bird Sanctuary houses feathered friends as common as the barn owl and as rare as the bald eagle, with attention paid to the health and habitats of the condors and hawks in between.
