Whether you're a leather-clad Harley rider or fresh out of Sunday church services, you're welcome at Augusta's Montelle Winery on a Sunday afternoon. You enter through the main hall, where free samples of reds, whites and rosés are poured by an informed staff. Once you select your favorite, you might also grab some cheese, sausage and crackers at the cashier counter or order from the full menu before heading outside to the main attraction: the multi-tiered wooden deck. Here, in the sun-dappled shade of oaks and maples, you can get cozy on the patio furniture as the house band plays old soul favorites. Jolly conversation comes easily at Montelle. But perhaps the biggest draw to this winery, which sits high on a hilltop, can be relished in perfect silence: the spectacular view. Spread out below are the straw pastures and chiseled-earth fields of the Missouri River valley. Drink it in — wine and all.
