An hour west of St. Louis along Interstate 44 lies Meramec State Park, a public reserve perhaps best known for its underground caverns. (The park is said to have more caves than any other state park in the nation.) Outdoorsmen also know the park as a great spot for fishing. The 461-acre park straddles the Meramec River, providing miles of shoreline for anglers. The water flowing through the park tends to be clearer than points downstream, says park naturalist Brian Wilcox, and that attracts more fish. Wilcox adds that the roots, rocks and deep pools along this stretch of the river also provide ample spots for fish (bass, catfish and bluegill are the most common) to hide. So, yeah, while the caves remain one of Meramec State Park's main draws, it's no coincidence that the grandest and most popular of those caverns is called, appropriately, Fisher Cave.
