Located beneath the bridge at the intersection of Kingshighway and Bischoff Avenue is a guerilla skate park known to locals as the Kingshighway Vigilante Transitions — KHVT for short. Construction began surreptitiously when local skaters, itching for a suitable place to skate, began pouring concrete by the bag-full and constructing their own ramps and jumps, sans permission of any kind. As time went on, the bag loads became truckloads, and the park started drawing the attention of city officials. What could have been disastrous proved to be a boon for the amateur masons when the city ultimately gave the park its blessing, even going so far as to provide a trash can and some extra concrete. With the success of the park, the KHVT board now plans on branching out and building similar parks throughout town. In the case of the Kingshighway spot, though, interested skaters had best get their kicks (or kickflips, perhaps) in now — the guerilla park is set to destruct in two years, when the Missouri Department of Transportation intends to demolish the aging bridge and rebuild it.
