Best Salad - 2012
The menu at Foundation Grounds is minimalist for a reason. The small, environmentally conscious café focuses on exceptional dishes it can prepare with ingredients procured from local farms, artisans and vendors. And when the offerings are as solid as FoGro's, you don't miss the filler. The small selection of salads is no exception; it features two varieties appropriately titled "Foundation" and "Grounds." The latter matches fresh, crisp spinach with candied pecans, feta, marinated red onion and pears; it's then topped with a light housemade balsamic vinaigrette. Don't let its short, simple ingredient list fool you: This is no mere heap o' greens. The sweet tang of the balsamic vinaigrette, the subtle crunch of the onion — these are flavors and textures that harmonize far beyond the range of the familiar salad scale. A generous serving of candied pecans turn this humble course into a meal that's both light and filling and, most important of all, delicious.
