Rail thin and bourbon weathered, Brian Curran cuts a mean blues-guitar-slinging figure. But he's no poseur. One of St. Louis' most accomplished finger-style guitarists, Curran mentored with the legends — Bobby Caldwell for starters — and whether playing a big old flat-top box or sliding a metal Resophonic guitar, Curran understands the feeling and the skill needed to play standards like "Statesboro Blues," "Avalon Blues" and "Pay Day." His influences, Mississippi John Hurt and Bukka White especially, are fully subsumed and honestly expressed in every note. And Curran has just the right mix of growl and grace in his voice to match those skillful licks.
