Best Neighborhood Bar (South County) - 2013
Psst, south-county first-graders: By the time you hit your mid-twenties, a significant life event will have taken place at Helen Fitzgerald's. Because from seemingly the beginning of time (but really only since St. Patrick's Day '92), "Let's go to Helen's" can only mean one thing in SoCo, and it ain't going to your aunt's house. Even as new places along Lindbergh Boulevard have come (biker/rocker behemoth Mile 277 Tap & Grill) and gone (RIP, Growlers Pub), Helen's, owned by the Syberg's crew, has earned and retained landmark status on that busy stretch filled with big-box stores and never-ending strip malls. For more than two decades, class reunions, company shindigs, foggy bachelorette parties and 21st birthdays have crammed onto its dance floor, patio and banquet room, and through it all, Helen's continues to be a gracious host. There's trivia, happy hours, dance parties and a menu that's finer than most. (Its filet mignon, for one, is better than any place with regular beer-pong nights has a right to be.) During happy hour — weekdays from 2 to 6 p.m. — many of Helen's apps are half price, while house wine, premium liquor, drafts and domestic bottles will set you back $3 or less.
