Vladimir and Estragon just won't go away. For 60 years, Samuel Beckett's two bewildered, sad-sack clowns have been waiting...and waiting. Meanwhile, the 1950s absurdist plays of Eugene Ionesco are yesterday's news; the profound existentialist dramas of Albert Camus have been relegated to the back burner. Yet Vladimir and Estragon, who understand nothing, continue to speak to the ever-changing times. In May they spoke with a marvelously confused clarity in the staging at St. Louis Actors' Studio. Directed by Bobby Miller, the dream cast featured Gary Wayne Barker as the more rational V and Terry Meddows as the hapless E. They received fine support from Greg Johnston's Pozzo and Aaron Orion Baker's Lucky. The weighty weightlessness of ambiguity has never been so compelling; the consequence of confusion has never seemed more immediate.
