  • Smittys Food & Drink

    Smittys Food & Drink

14876 Clayton Road Chesterfield, MO 63017
    636-391-1522

Smitty's is a cozy little restaurant tucked away in a plaza off Clayton Road in Chesterfield. Specializing in homestyle comfort food such as chicken fried steak, pasta and fried chicken, Smitty's is suitable for the whole family. Although there's a full-service bar, they are more focused on food here than alcohol. (You'll find plenty of daily specials for entrees, but none for booze.) On the weekends, though, live music brings in a younger crowd; you can also play shuffleboard. The parking lot of the plaza where Smitty's is located is small and can be difficult to navigate, especially during peak hours. Don't be surprised if you have to fight with an American Cleaners customer for a parking spot. Read more about Smittys Food & Drink >>

    Smokey Joe's

3998 Lake St. Granite City, IL 62040
    618-931-2279

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Smokey-Joes/120263534656664 Smokey Joe's waits in the darkness of the Great River Road like a tiny smoke-filled oasis. The roadside tavern serves as both an escape for the twentysomething from Edwardsville who wants to avoid small talk with former high-school classmates and a pit stop for regulars, many of them guys who work at U.S. Steel in Granite City. Smokey Joe's has many dive qualities -- think water-stained ceiling panels and yellowing decor -- but it is a lively place. Though the beer coasters proclaim, "Less talk'n, more drink'n at Smokey Joe's," the crowd at the bar is always chuckling and yakking away. The shuffleboard table no longer takes coins, but it still gets some play. An entire wall to the left of the entrance is lined with casino-style video games. The sole loner present is engrossed in video slots, but when someone starts playing the digital jukebox, he ponies up five bucks to keep the music coming. Read more about Smokey Joe's >>

  • Smuggler

    Smuggler's Inn

1757 Woodson Road Overland, MO 63114
    314-426-4262

Upon arrival to Smuggler's Inn with a camera, I was accosted almost immediately by a stern woman inquiring just what my business was. When I explained that I was with the RFT, updating bar listings, she laughed and replied "Well this place ain't nothing more than a hole in the wall!" and immediately led me inside. In business for over 20 years, the tiny bar has accumulated a colorful cast of regulars who are quick to buy you a drink and tell you all about their family -- as it turns out the woman I spoke with was one such regular, and her son's picture was hanging on the wall behind the bar. While "hole in the wall" may be accurate in a size-related sense, it should be noted that Smuggler's Inn just may be the friendliest hole you'll ever have the pleasure to visit. • Social House Soulard

    Social House Soulard

    1551 S. 7th St. St. Louis, MO 63104
    314-241-3825

http://www.socialhousesoulard.com Social House took over the spot formerly occupied by M.P. O'Reilly's in Soulard across from the farmers' market. Its menu features typical pub grub -- wings, spinach-artichoke dip and nachos to start, with burgers, sandwiches and pizza later on the list. Wraps include a veggie option, featuring roasted vegetables, rice and tomato-basil sauce. Social House also offers entertainment, with pool tables, video games, dart boards and a large dance floor where 18-year-olds can mingle with the 21-and-up crowd while scantily clad shot girls deliver Jagerbombs and Bud Light in pitchers. • Sonny

    Sonny's

1026 Geyer Ave. St. Louis, MO 63104

The Soulard jazz-and-blues club Spooty's recently reopened with new owners as an entirely different concept: Sonny's. Gone are the open-mic blues jams; in their place is a pretty standard Soulard watering hole -- meaning that Sonny's is cheerful, casual and cheap. Nothing wrong with that--except think twice before you bring a date. Tuesday night trivia runs from 8 to 10 p.m., while an all-day happy hour on Wednesdays includes $2 24-ounce beer cans all day long. Read more about Sonny's >>

  • Sonny

    Sonny's Saloon

3819 Meramec St. St. Louis, MO 63116
    314-771-9990

Sonny's Saloon is the kind of place where patrons show up in paint-splattered jeans or offer high fives with hands slick from mechanics' grease - and where you're likely to be greeted with free shots just for being female. Happy hour seemingly never ends; it's from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day, with $10 buckets, $2 wells and $1.50 drafts. Sonny's is a small neighborhood sports bar where the drink is Budweiser, the jokes are blue and the collars are too. Read more about Sonny's Saloon >>

  • Soulard Bastille Bar

    Soulard Bastille Bar

1027 Russell Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63104
    314-664-4408

http://www.soulardbastille.com If you're looking for a smoky gay bar in which to wile the night away, the Soulard Bastille may be your new favorite hang. The owner closed the kitchen in order to skirt the 2011 smoking ban, and has since hung giant cigarette sculptures outside the bar that read "This house is a'smokin." The walls are covered in flair, from a buffalo head on the wall to Rocky Horror light-up signs and rainbow-colored icicle lights adorning the ceiling. The bartenders are extremely friendly; don't be surprised if they ask you -- no, make that, order you -- to belly up to the bar for mandatory shots. Read more about Soulard Bastille Bar >>

    Southtown Pub

    3707 S Kingshighway St. Louis, MO 63109
    314-832-9009

http://www.facebook.com/pages/South-Town-Pub-and-Grill/198688854882 Southtown Pub is a friendly south-city hangout with plenty of character. Drinks are cheap, there's a Golden Tee machine tucked next to the bar and every seat is occupied by a regular, chattering away like it's a family reunion. In other words, you're on the south side. The place is as unpretentious as bars get, and the Pabst-swilling hipsters roam freely among the Bud heavy-drankin' baseball-capped frequent flyers. A sign above the bar reads: "We don't serve women, bring your own." Not the worst advice we've ever heard at a place like this. Read more about Southtown Pub >>
