The Waiting Room is a rock'n'roll joint done right, with wit and wisdom to spare. The bartenders and the patrons are some of the friendliest, down-to-earth people you can hope to meet, and the drinks and signature shots are fantastic. The Waiting Room carries excellent micro-brews, import and domestic beers, and TJ's pizza. It's also got a pool table, a darts league that meets on Wednesdays and a lovely patio out back. Every Thursday there's Beer League, a beer-tasting club that welcomes aficionados to sample international brews. Make sure to check out the beautiful hardwood counter -- it was fashioned from historic pocket doors. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>
The Watson Bar and Grill is a dive bar for the true dive-bar devotee. Through a miasma of cigarette smoke, one can make out a U-shaped bar densely populated by the bar's grizzled yet gracious inhabitants. Conveniently located in the heart of south county, the Watson Bar and Grill is an ideal location to grab a cold one and commiserate with your fellow laborer after a day of backbreaking work. If conversation wanes, there's always a sports game on the tube or the tried-and-true dartboard (located in a dark corner festively lit by Christmas lights). Though it does offer a menu comprised of typical bar fare, the watering hole maintains no illusions of its primary appeal, which is clearly demarcated by the sign on the building's exterior: DRINK. http://www.wave-taco.com Wave Taco opened in early 2009 on a once-vacant lot just north of Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis. It imported several tons of white sand from Florida, set up two immaculate outdoor beach volleyball courts and declared its motto to be "shirts optional." Order the house specialty -- a supersweet concoction called the Frozen Margarita Swirl -- at the tiki bar, then try not to stare too hard at the swimsuit-clad coeds frolicking on the faux beach. The only difference between this place and a south-of-the-border hotspot is that the kids are drinking Bud Light Lime instead of Corona with lime. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>
http://www.myspace.com/wayoutclub Nostalgia hits like a ton bricks at this club, adorned with framed photos and artwork of pop culture past. Every inch of wall and ceiling space is covered with something here: B-movie posters, random art, framed pin-up girls giving their best sexyface, a collection of dead, vintage televisions, and weird alien fetuses housed in glass bottles like so many formaldehyde frogs. The TV sets that do work display obscure exploitation and indie-flicks. This hip watering hole has a venue side with a tall stage, booming sound system and enough seating in the form of '50s dinette sets to make Betty Draper jealous. In its storied history, the Way Out Club has hosted many a music group, ranging from psychedelic jam bands to all-girl garage rockers. Both the bar and show areas are spacious, providing ample room for the occasional interpretive dance, or punk rock flailing. The booze selection looks keen, and this spot stands to be a rare haven for hippies and hipsters alike. Just don't forget to give Angus, the Way Out's resident feline, some love; he's really the one running the place. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>
This cozy Princeton Heights hole in the wall is a drinker's dream. Forgoing the flash and tired bombast of many "hip" night spots, Weber's focuses on what matters most: cheap drinks, friendly service and a warm atmosphere. The bar just makes you feel welcome, allowing patrons to unwind without feeling the desire to impress. If you've grown weary of novelty, and you enjoy daily happy-hour specials on already inexpensive drinks, Weber's might just be your new favorite place to drink. http://www.wildcountrynightclub.com Wild Country in Collinsville, Illinois, is a country-Western nightclub that offers line dancing, live country music and plenty of drink specials -- including $2 bombs on Wednesdays, $1.50 longnecks all night on Fridays and $5 pitchers on Saturdays, in addition to other specials. http://www.thewoodstl.com This Maplewood spot for food and music, situated on Sutton Boulevard just south of Manchester Road, offers patrons a good-size menu filled with the usual bar food, sandwiches, burgers, salads and pizzas. Pizzas at the Wood are brick-oven-baked, twelve inches in diameter and come with a number of toppings available, including bacon, sausage, portobella mushrooms and ground turkey. The Wood also offers specialty pizzas, such as a veggie, meat lover's and chicken wings, which comes with grilled chicken and a spicy sauce. Other dining options include toasted ravioli, homemade chili, chicken strips and a few different burger options, such as a turkey burger or the "black-and-blue" burger, a half-pound patty topped with blue cheese and bacon. The Wood also features various bands on most weekend nights, as well as DJs. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>
The name is Woodstock Lounge, but locals are likely to refer to this downtown Alton bar as "Bud Light," since the brew's protruding sign overshadows the bar's own name on its storefront. The no-nonsense vibe continues inside where the beer is cheap, the jukebox is loud, and three flat-screen TVs proudly display the evening's most crucial sporting event. Woodstock is a bring-your-own-camaraderie kind of place whose only luxury is its spacious smoking patio. If you like your bars cozy and low on frivolity, Woodstock Lounge has a domestic bottle with your name on it. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>
