  • African Palace Bar & Grill

    African Palace Bar & Grill

4005 Seven Hills Drive Florissant, MO 63033
    314-921-4600

http://www.africanpalacebar.com You don't get to eat a giant snail every day. Or, for that matter, yam porridge or fried plantains or palm juice. Unless, that is, you visit African Palace, one of the few local African restaurants that offers an alternative to Ethiopian cuisine. A thick sauce made from red bell peppers, onion, tomatoes, olive oil and lots of atarodo peppers is liberally employed in many of the dishes, from soups to gizzards to wings (and that giant snail). For an entrée, try the meat-and-rice-based jollof (prepared, like most of the main courses, with your choice of beef, chicken or fish), or the Daily Special (which is the same every day): a brightly flavored stew that unites dried cod, chicken and tripe with greens and that rich pepper sauce. Bonus: On weekends, African Palace becomes a nightclub, featuring reggae and world-beat music. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>

  • Brewskeez Florissant

    Brewskeez Florissant

    1792 N. New Florissant Florissant, MO 63033
    314-830-9206

http://www.brewskeez.net Brewskeez touts itself as a "sports cafe," which translates to tons of appetizers, including potato skins, T-ravs and wings. Brewskeez rounds out their menu with salads, wraps, pizza and burgers, but there are a few unexpected choices, such as veal-and-portabella-mushroom ravioli. There's also pool and darts to entertain guests in between innings. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>

  • Classics Bar & Grill

    Classics Bar & Grill

    11601 W. Florissant Florissant, MO 63033
    314-837-1181

From the checkerboard floor and pool tables to the lively rock n' roll atmosphere, Classics certainly lives up to its name. The kindly owner himself can often be found at the bar, sitting and drinking with townies, swapping war stories and hugging the regulars. Classics proudly boasts championship pool and darts teams, as well as a formidable music lounge affectionately called "The Other Side" which hosts local blues and rock bands. The heated and florid patio will keep you cozy outside, and a menu of American classics (mostly burgers and sandwiches) will keep you cozy inside. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>

  • Coltrane

    Coltrane's

3 Patterson Plaza Florissant, MO 63031
    314-921-0988

http://www.coltranesbarandgrill.com A visually odd north-county gem, Coltranes surprises its guests with intriguing patrons and a nautical theme. (The space calls to mind the interior of a private boat, with wood paneling and portholes throughout.) There are a plethora of pool tables and a pretty rockin' jukebox. And while anywhere else, a wall of mirrors might seem seedy or strange, at Coltranes, it's actually a fun detail that creates a mirage of additional space. If you're a lady, don't you dare miss General Ladies' Night every Wednesday; Coltranes also offers karaoke every Saturday. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>

    314-838-0002

http://www.deaversrestaurant.com Deaver's is a live, loud, sprawling sports bar teeming with attractive co-eds and rowdy young urban professionals alike. A multitude of flat screens and a red-blooded American menu accommodate hungry sports-lovers, and there's even a private banquet room that seats 50 for all your Fantasy Football needs. It can get pretty crowded and festive in the main rooms, but, fortunately, there's a spacious patio lined with ivy for a smoke and a cocktail during half time. • Gater

    Gater's Bar and Restaurant

2778 Lindbergh Blvd. Florissant, MO 63033
    314-831-1777

Gater's is a sprawling sports bar with a loyal customer base -- within 5 minutes I had concerned patrons asking me what my business was with a camera. After explaining myself I was greeted heartily and told that "Tiffany is the best bartender is St. Louis!" The bar itself is unique in that the area where Miss Tiffany was working is actually sunken in, making those seated at the bar tower over the staff, in office chairs. Oh yeah, they have wheelie office chairs rather than barstools, too -- one can imagine the drunken shenanigans that invites. Tiffany served up the bar's signature shot - a "Gater shot", whose secret recipe involves five kinds of liquor and tastes like lime-aid. Delicious. Nine TVs line the walls, and DJ Money (there every Thursday) was spinning hip hop records to a receptive group of North County partiers. Add to all that a dozen tables, the obligatory Big Buck Hunter and electronic darts games and you have a not-so-secret recipe for a good time. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>

  • Handlebars

    Handlebars

    1149 N. Highway 67 Florissant, MO 63031

Not to be confused with Tower Grove's The Handlebar (singular), which caters to bicycle types, Handlebars (plural) is a North County biker bar catering to rough-and-tumble motorcycle types. To give an idea, I was threatened and then bought a shot within 5 minutes of entrance, both by the same patron. Don't get me wrong, Handlebars is an inviting atmosphere (that patron wasn't the only to buy me a drink) with specials nearly every night of the week. Monday nights feature free pool, Tuesday is Trivia Night with an array of prizes to be won, Wednesday features "drunken bingo", on Thursdays the drinks are two-for-one, and on the weekends they pack the house with live bands and a red light special wherein the thirsty masses are given 5 minutes for free shots when a wall-mounted siren sounds. With sports on the four TVs that line the walls, Silver Tee, pools tables and darts, Handlebars is a sure-fire spot for a good time. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>

  • Joe

    Joe's Pub

    314-921-6865

Snuggled in the quaint French-inflected suburb of Old Town Florissant, Joe's Pub is a place with its *coeur* on its sleeve. This bar is teeming with a friendly crowd that's equal parts college students, sports fanatics and motorcycle enthusiasts. Joe's has an unusual level of extroversion: A surprising number of its regulars are thrilled to strike up a chat with newcomers. If you love beer-pong tournaments, conversations about upgrading your Harley and raucous karaoke -- and you don't mind wall-to-wall smoke -- Joe's has a cold one and some warm friends waiting for you. • Pirate

    Pirate's Cove

470 Howdershell Road Florissant, MO 63031
    314-830-0820

Pirate's Cove is a sports bar with a nautical outlook -- skull & crossbones and pirate ship adornments cover the walls alongside glowing neon beer signs and flat screen TVs. The spacious bar includes a portion of hardwood floor set up for washers -- a fun inclusion to the usual darts / golden tee / pool tables set-up (all of which can also be found here). Smokers will be glad to find ashtrays on the dozen or so tables and drinkers will be pleased with the full bar selection and courteous bartenders. Off to the side is a small stage for live music; Pirate's Cove is known to play host to bar and cover bands on weekends. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>

  • Rookies Bar & Grill

6825 Parker Road Florissant, MO 63033
    314-741-9744

  • Streiler

    Streiler's Pub

555 Howdershell Road Florissant, MO 63031
    314-837-7475

In the hotbed of Howdershell bars, Streiler's beckons to the common man to come in and sit for a bit with his buddies and some Bud Light. Low lighting, pool tables, and live blues spruce up this easy-going but tough-talkin' bar. Patrons tend to be advanced in years, but that longevity creates a sense of camaraderie that you don't find in larger bars. The crowd is hearty and friendly, and the barmaids -- who aren't afraid to show off their faded tattoos -- are sweet with banter and salty when it's last call. Mostly American beer is served here, and the bar space has the feel of a 1970s brown-and-tan basement get-together after a long day of pouring concrete for the man. Steiler's wouldn't have it any other way. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>
