http://www.cjmuggs.com With a large menu, big bar and plenty of seating, C.J. Muggs, at the corner of Lockwood and Gore avenues in Webster Groves, feeds and entertains locals and newcomers en masse. The menu features expected and unexpected bar fare, including Bayou shrimp sautéed in a beer-and-butter sauce, three-bean chicken chili and Creole gumbo. C.J. Muggs also serves an expansive selection of pizzas, baked with both mozzarella and Provel cheeses. Some of the restaurant's heftier bites include entrées, burgers and sandwiches, including a bourbon pepper steak, seared and topped with a sweet onion bourbon sauce and onion strings, a barbecued pulled pork sandwich and the "St. Louis Bleus" burger topped with blue cheese and bacon. Local musicians rock out on a corner stage, and after a few beers, you'll be waving your lighter in the air with a group of new best friends. C.J. Muggs also offers patio seating along the sidewalk, and the Webster Groves location houses a large private banquet room. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>
Danno's American Pub is a bit off the beaten path for the average city-bound 'hood rat, but it's also a good reminder why venturing out of the city is a worthwhile exercise. Danno's is exactly what you expect from a classic American bar, except this one is tended by an adventurous mixologist, not just someone who knows what goes in a cranberry-vodka. Danno's casual atmosphere and comfy club chairs lend a relaxed air that facilitates anonymity -- something that's hard to come by in the big small town that is St. Louis proper. http://www.farottos.com Farotto's has been serving up St. Louis-style Italian food since 1956. Appetizers include stuffed risotto cakes, bruschetta and, for true St. Louisans, Provel sticks. Farotto's also offers lunch combos, sandwiches, burgers and pasta. The dinner menu expands the offerings with St. Louis-style pizza, more pasta choices and entrées such as pistachio-encrusted salmon, chicken saltimbocca and a stuffed pork chop: twelve ounces of pig stuffed with portabella mushrooms, onions and blue cheese crumbles then topped with apple-walnut chutney. With its extensive list of coffee cocktails, Farotto's makes for a great escape on a chilly night. Particularly noteworthy is its wine bar, which offers a weekday happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>
http://www.hwy61roadhouse.com The heartiest of the food found along the old Blues Highway is the stock-in-trade of this charming Webster Groves spot. From old favorites like St. Louis-style spare ribs and pan-fried chicken to stuff you may never have tried (like delicious fried tamales), you'll find something to stick to your ribs, with more than enough left over for the next day. Cajun and Creole specialities, including a gumbo dense with chicken and andouille sausage or shrimp-and-crawfish étouffée, are excellent. Be sure to save room for "The King": a deep-fried peanut-butter-and-banana sandwich topped with shaved chocolate. Read more about this St. Louis bar or club >>
http://www.llywelynspub.com An outpost of the longtime Central West End haunt, in the heart (or perhaps more accurately, the kidney) of old Webster. This cavernous, barnlike setting is actually quite attractive, if a bit of an echo chamber on busy weekends. For more info, see listing under "Midtown/West End." http://www.robbieshouseofjazz.com The premise is promising: a jazz club in Webster Groves, in the pocket for sophisticated tastes in the suburbs. Patrons will discover that Robert and Dorothy Edwards' venue is still seeking a regular audience, with plenty of room for pros and novices to share a stage. While weekends may feature regional or national acts, typical Tuesday night jam sessions see seasoned musicians and students of all ages taking cues from each other, improvising a community in piano riffs and jumping bass lines. The Watson Bar and Grill is a dive bar for the true dive-bar devotee. Through a miasma of cigarette smoke, one can make out a U-shaped bar densely populated by the bar's grizzled yet gracious inhabitants. Conveniently located in the heart of south county, the Watson Bar and Grill is an ideal location to grab a cold one and commiserate with your fellow laborer after a day of backbreaking work. If conversation wanes, there's always a sports game on the tube or the tried-and-true dartboard (located in a dark corner festively lit by Christmas lights). Though it does offer a menu comprised of typical bar fare, the watering hole maintains no illusions of its primary appeal, which is clearly demarcated by the sign on the building's exterior: DRINK.
