  • Il Bel Lago

    Il Bel Lago

11631 Olive Blvd Creve Coeur, MO 63141
314-994-1080 Il Bel Lago may sit in a commercial strip along Olive Boulevard, but once inside, diners are whisked away to an upscale, romantic setting. Starters include Italian-restaurant staple calamari, while entrée options range from the house cannelloni to rack of lamb to lobster tail. Lunch-time diners can enjoy a one of Il Bel Lago's pasta dishes or risotto, or simply opt for a club sandwich or pizza. More >>

  • Iron Barley

    Iron Barley

5510 Virginia Ave. St. Louis, MO 63111
314-351-4500 Hoosier food is elevated to haute status at this unassuming South St. Louis outpost, where chef and owner Tom Coghill (previously head kitchen honcho at Frazer's Brown Bag) wields his cast-iron cookware to produce unbelievable creations: oak-roasted pork and chicken, toasted barley, green beans with bacon and onion, barley paella, hot smoked salmon and more. Coghill goes for broke and hits the jackpot with sweet-salty-spicy combos, like the Ballistic Elvis Sammiche (or sandwich, to the unenlightened): American cheese, strawberry preserves, sliced bananas, peanut butter and red pepper flakes. Just-plain-folk service and kitschy-cute Southern décor round out the experience -- one that's worth having over and over, and cozy outdoor bar and patio make it worth stopping in casually whenever the hunger strikes. • Island Bar

    Island Bar

14560 Manchester Road Ballwin, MO 63011
636-527-9790 Here in landlocked Missouri, it's not every day that we get an island getaway. But if you can fill the void of a tropical paradise with its accoutrements -- surf boards, pirate flags, anchors and a life-sized Captain Morgan statue -- then Island Bar is right for you. A small but friendly heavily-themed bar in Ballwin just off Manchester Road, Island Bar has karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights, plus a Wii console, which they used to use for free bowling tournaments. There hasn't been a tournament in a few years, but customers are welcome to play solo anytime for free. Nicotine users rejoice: Because Island Bar only serves pizza to eat, they plan to remain a smoking bar even after the city of St. Louis enforces its smoke free ordinance after the new year. More >>
