http://www.rebuild-foundation.org Combining community organizing with historic preservation and contemporary art, the Rebuild Foundation offers a bold and ambitious vision that speaks to the heart of today's most avant-garde visual practices. Disposing of the convention that an art space must present work that hangs demurely on the wall, Theaster Gates, a Chicago native and meteoric star in contemporary art, has molded the Rebuild Foundation to be art in every active, participatory form -- from the structure itself to the community it lives amid to the activities and projects it hosts. In scattered sites nationwide -- Chicago, Detroit and Omaha, as well as both Old North St. Louis and Pagedale -- the organization rescues otherwise neglected residential structures and revitalizes them to perform myriad new roles. Introduced to St. Louis via a project he did in 2010 in conjunction with the Pulitzer Foundation's Gordon Matta-Clarke exhibition and local artist Juan William Chavez, Gates was taken with the city, and in particular its north side. By 2012 his nonprofit was running in St. Louis full throttle, with a local, live-in program organizer, a resident artist, an intern-and-education program and a team of volunteers. The organization has orchestrated joint programs with other nonprofits that have further deepened its local involvement and presence. More >>
http://www.facebook.com/pages/RED-FISH-BLUE-FISH/158018780887116 The loyal patrons still come in flocks to Red Fish Blue Fish every weekend, some completely unaware that the bar is under a new name and management as of November 2010. (The spacious bar, located right next to Highway 70 on Hawk's Nest near Zumbehl, was called M.T. Rockers until November 2010.) These days, Red Fish Blue Fish has a generous happy hour, with $2 domestic drafts, $2.25 domestic bottles and well drinks, and $4 appetizers from 3-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Live bands perform every night except Thursday, when karaoke takes over. Service can be rather slow on the busy weekends, with only two bartenders serving an entire room full of ravenous 20-somethings. So come prepared either to wait for a drink or to make your presence at the bar known. When you finally get around to ordering, bartenders swear by their sangrias and margaritas, served in an appropriate fish bowl. More >>
http://www.allgreatrestaurants.com One of three very successful Tim Mallett-run restaurants, Remy's (named for his kid, not the Cognac) emphasizes wines by offering "flight" tastings of three different glasses to go with Mediterranean-themed meals of tapas-style "small plates" or standard-entrée "large plates." The complimentary black-olive tapenade served with bread is a real treat. More >>
http://www.richs-place.com The family-owned and operated Rich's Place has resided for the past six years on the outer road of Highway 94 near Jungerman in St. Charles. Rich's Place serves no food, so smoking is allowed throughout. (Rich's also hosts parties, allowing groups to bring their own catered food to avoid the smoking ban.) Daily drink specials include half-priced drinks for ladies on Monday; $1.50 longnecks, $1 domestic drafts, $3 calls and rails on Tuesday's karaoke night; $11 domestic buckets on Wednesday's open mic night; and the same $11 domestic buckets on Thursday's game night, which features Texas hold 'em, darts and pool. Rich's also features a dance floor and live music on Friday and Saturday, with local bands covering Kelly Clarkson and Fergie to set the mood. More >>
Located on Arsenal Street, one block east of Grand Boulevard, Riley's Pub features St. Louis-style pizza served piping hot in a corner-bar atmosphere in south city. There are no DJs, dress code or gimmicks, just drinks and a jukebox. The interior is old-school: In its dim, high-backed booths, you'll feel equally comfortable sharing a Guinness with an intimate group of friends or penning your first novel while knocking back shots of Jameson. Daily food and drink specials are written on a big chalkboard above the large, dark wooden bar, and Riley's has live Irish music weekly and $5 St. Louis-style pizzas on Monday and Tuesdays. Riley's is closed on Sundays but does keep serving the pies until late in the evening on other nights. It offers carry out as well. More >>
http://www.robertsorpheum.com For too many years the stunning American Theatre declined, and eventually the owner stopped booking shows there altogether. Anyone who ever attended a concert in the classically designed old theater was ecstatic when it reopened, rehabilitated to its former grandeur. Welcome to this downtown home for nationally touring performers of all stripes and one-off events ranging from fashion shows to electronic paloozas. More >>
http://www.theroyale.com Why is the Royale everyone's favorite place to kick back? Could it be the comfy wooden booths or the St. Louis-themed cocktails? The hardback book menus or the framed pictures of cultural heroes like Abe Lincoln and JFK? The backyard patio with freestanding fireplace and koi pond, or the fans made of tires? Perhaps it's all of the above, complemented by local DJs spinning hits old and new. The Royale is unique, a place where those passionate about St. Louis gather to discuss policy and politics - and music and city living and maybe a little boxing, too - while sipping swank cocktails and eating good food. The burgers are excellent, none more so than the "Royale," a carnivore's delight of premium Wagyu beef from Down Under. Other standouts include smoked brisket tacos and a terrific roast-beef sandwich with garlic aioli. Several dishes made with locally produced Match Meat are available for vegetarians and vegans. So go ahead and meet your friends -- they're probably already here. More >>
http://www.rue13stl.com Rue 13 is arguably the hottest spot on Washington Avenue, and it's easy to see why. Spacious and comfortable, and with as much room for lounging as dancing, the place has plenty of room to accommodate its throngs of loyal clubgoers. Besides pool tables and Megatouch, Rue 13 offers a fireplace lounge for movie viewing, a DJ booth for theme-night spinning and sushi for late-night sustenance. While it's best known for That 80s Club on Fridays, Rue 13 provides surefire entertainment all week long. More >>
