Poems can certainly stand on their own, as emotive expressions and works of art, but they can also work in concert with other creative forms. When a poem is paired with music, for example, the resulting piece may be appreciated and understood more than either part on its own; because the juxtaposition makes for comprehension on several levels. People with an ear for song might tune into the tonality of the words, and those with an affinity toward the written word just may hear something new. When you add visual art to that equation, the interpretations of the works will be even broader and the number of people touched even greater still. Witness this kind of melting pot of creativity at the 2009 Poetry Scores Art Invitational, held at the Luminary Center for the Arts (4900 Reber Place; 314-807-5984 or www.theluminaryarts.com). Poetry Scores, a local arts organization (poetryscores.blogspot.com), has set Les Murray's The Sydney Highrise Variations to musical compositions, and at the release party for this poetry score, artwork that was created in response to specific lines from the poem will be auctioned off. Participating artists include Jon Cournoyer, Jenna Bauer, Stefene Russell, Christopher Gustave and others. The art auction runs from 6 to 10 p.m., and then the party moves over to the Royale (3132 South Kingshighway Boulevard) to really focus on the partying part of the night.
