D-Day, the 1944 Allied invasion of occupied France, was one of the most important battles of Western history. It has been analyzed, fictionalized and re-created in a number of media, so why attempt to do so again? French filmmaker Pascal Vuong wanted to look not just at what happened on June 6, 1944, but what occurred from the earliest planning stages in '43 right through the fateful day, with an emphasis on the engineering and new technology that was needed to achieve success. Vuong's documentary, D-Day: Normandy 1944, uses impressive CGI and extensive live-action re-creations to depict key battle sequences, and features narration by Tom Brokaw. D-Day: Normandy 1944 screens daily at the St. Louis Science Center's OMNIMAX Theater (5050 Oakland Avenue, 314-289-4400 or www.slsc.org). Admission is $8 to $9.
