With the 250th anniversary of the founding of our fair city upon us (per historians, the official date is sometime in mid-February), much time will be spent looking back at where we once were and how we got our start, and rightfully so. Imagining the Founding of St. Louis, an exhibition at the Sheldon Art Galleries (3648 Washington Boulevard; 314-533-9900 or www.thesheldon.org), takes on this role superbly. Displaying artworks, maps and other objects on loan from the Missouri History Museum, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Osage Tribal Museum and others -- in fact, during the first month of the show, you can even lay your eyes on Auguste Chouteau's own written account of life in the new settlement -- this exhibition provides both substance and context for our roots. But as you view the artifacts on display, challenge yourself not only to put yourself in those early St. Louisans shoes, but also try to imagine filling the shoes (space boots?) of the St. Louisans of tomorrow -- 25, 100, 250 years from now -- and go forth, making your time here worth remembering. Imagining opens with a free reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 7, and remains on view through Saturday, August 23. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday.
