Traditionally, a few photos are taken at a birthday party. As this year marks the 250th birthday of the city of St. Louis, the Sheldon and the St. Louis Beacon sponsored a photography contest in honor of the city -- and the winners have been selected. The City at 250 comprises more than 100 images of the city as seen by residents. Some are by professionals, some were taken by amateur hobbyists and there was even a youth division. The City at 250 is a visual record of everything that makes St. Louis great: pictures of our distinctive architecture, our unique civic institutions, our numerous neighborhoods and, of course, the diverse residents who inhabit those places. The exhibition opens with a free reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Sheldon (3648 Washington Boulevard; 314-533-9900 or www.thesheldon.org). The City at 250 remains on display through Saturday, August 23, and the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday.
