Mammoth Mammals

Mark Fischer

While images of cavemen taking down a brontosaurus are embedded in pop culture, our leviathan lizards went the way of the dinosaur 60 million years before the first Fred Flintstones walked the earth. Dinosaurs did co-exist with small, warm-blooded critters, but it took the dinos extinction to pave the way for giant mammals. Nothing but the five-story OMNIMAX screen could do justice to the wooly mammoths, saber-toothed cats and giant sloths of the Pleistocene Epoch, and so Titans of the Ice Age comes to the Saint Louis Science Center's OMNIMAX Theater (5050 Oakland Avenue; 314-289-4424 or www.slsc.org). The film features state-of-the-art computer effects to reproduce these giant creatures, with actual footage of the Rocky Mountains and the Northern Great Plains to stand-in as the Pleistocene. Christopher Plummer provides the narration. Titans of the Ice Age screens daily through Sunday, July 13. Admission is $8 to $9.
