X-Marks-the-Spot Factor

Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island is a ripping yarn about pirates and buried treasure, and the moral development of young Jim Hawkins. Coming into possession of a treasure map, Hawkins joins forces with family friend Dr. Livesey and his comrade Squire Trelawney in an attempt to find the ill-gotten wealth of nefarious pirate Captain Flint (deceased). With Flint's murderous crew also on the hunt, Hawkins and company engage in a mad race to find the titular island and the gold before Flint's men — and before Flint's men can kill them. Filled with memorable characters, not the least of which is the jovial and thoroughly untrustworthy Long John Silver, Treasure Island has action, intrigue, parrots, dead man's chests and pirate-speak enough to satisfy any audience. St. Louis Shakespeare presents Treasure Island at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (November 6 through 15), with a 7:30 p.m. show on Thursday, November 12, at the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or www.stlshakespeare.org). Tickets are $10 to $25.
