One day when I was in the sixth grade -- during gym class, I think -- a classmate I didn't know very well came up to me and started spouting off the funniest shit I'd ever heard. It was an entire comedy routine, at least five minutes long, parodying a radio news broadcast. He had another bit as a d.j. on a rock station. Both were dated -- there was a "hippy-dippy weatherman" -- but at the time I was laughing too hard to notice.
A few months later, after my dad and I saw George Carlin on the Tonight Show or something like that, my dad played one of his Carlin records, AM/FM, for me. And I heard the two routines my now best friend had recited as his own . He'd memorized them word-for-word.
Almost 20 years later, he's still my best friend. Thanks, George.
