The August 31, 2008, issue of Wine Spectator (in my mailbox today) includes the magazine's annual Restaurant Awards, which honor outstanding wine lists. This year's winners number 4,129 restaurants worldwide. The award is prestigious. However, not every restaurant is eligible. A restaurant must enter its wine list into consideration at a cost of $250.
There are three awards: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence and the Grand Award. (See this post on last year's awards to see details the distinctions.)
Among St. Louis restaurants, there were only a few changes from last year. Two new restaurants were added to the list of winners: Charlie Gitto's on the Hill and Ruth's Chris Steak House in Clayton received Awards of Excellence. Busch's Grove was also added to the list of winners, but it closed in May.
No longer on the list is Villa Farotto. Also absent are a couple of restaurants that have closed: Faust's and the St. Louis Fish Market. Finally, Savor, which closed last month, is still included.
