My readers and fellow foodies, there is a time when every true patriot must stand up for what he or she believes. Today, as Barack Obama and John McCain prepare for their first debate -- they will be debating, if you hadn't heard -- as our leaders try to fix a floundering financial system, as our brave soldiers fight wars in two countries, I ask you to join me in fighting for a cause that strikes at the very heart of Gut Check's being.
We must free the Middletown 28.
From the Middletown (Connecticut) Post:
Nearly 30 high school seniors were suspended for two days after holding a morning barbecue on the grounds at the high school Tuesday.
That's right. A barbecue led to a suspension.
According to grill-owner Kyle Sheehan, most of the seniors had late arrival and were not expected in school until 9:30, so they met in the lot at around 8:30, set up the grill and chilled, as the aroma of bacon wafted through the morning air.
"We didn't have beer, we didn't have weed, we had bacon," said Eddie Mangini, who along with the others did not anticipate the two-day suspension.
I ask you: What kind of facist state have we become? I urge you to show your support for the Middletown 28 by signing your name and outrage in the comments below. If I can gather enough support, I will forward this post to the principal in question, letting him know that this will not stand. Barbecue must prevail.
No bacon, no peace.
