As a chocolatier offering scrumptious tortes, pastries, wine pairings and even the occasional chocolate martini, Bissinger's at Maryland Plaza
has long been a favorite spot of midafternoon snackers and dessert-minded revelers.
But now you don't have to eat your veggies -- or even get past lunchtime -- before pausing to give yourself a little treat: Bissinger's is opening for breakfast, too.
Beginning at 6 a.m. today, the Central West End eatery has begun offering morning hours. Assistant Manager Tambora Mills tells Gutcheck that they intend to be open from 6 a.m. to noon, seven days a week.
"We thought, if we're going to do the coffee thing, let's do it every day," he says.
The shop's chocolate-y treats will be for sale during the new hours, as well as a host of coffee drinks, hot tea, blueberry muffins, scones, biscotti and other pastries. "There will be more things to hopefully come," Mills says. "If people are coming in and saying, 'We want this,' we can make that happen."
Seeking a soft opening, Bissinger's did nothing to announce the new hours beyond stationing Mills at the door and offering free coffee to passersby. The managers also made the brilliant decision to give a box of chocolates and a sheaf of coupons for free coffee to Tony Streckfuss, who runs the newsstand at the corner of Maryland and Euclid and serves as something of a town crier for the Central West End. (Clearly more generous than many chocoholics would be in a similar situation, Streckfuss cheerfully shared the candies and coupons with his regulars.)
For the record, Mills doesn't think the new morning coffee service will upset the other coffee shops in Bissinger's block, which include Coffee Cartel and Starbucks. "We've got kind of a different customer," he says. "That Starbucks is very tiny; you can't have a business meeting in there. You can have that here."
Bissinger's is typically closed on Monday, so that'll be the only day in which the restaurant will close at noon. On all the other days, it'll remain open all day long. (On Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, it will close at 6 p.m. On Thursday, it'll be open 'til 10 p.m.; on the weekends, 'til midnight.)
