The Joint: Sage Urban American Grill 1031 Lynch Street; 314-256-1203
The Hours: 4-6 p.m. Mon.-Fri.
The Deal: $2 domestic longnecks, $11 domestic buckets, $4 house wines, $4 wells, half off select appetizers.
The Scene: Located in the shadow of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Sage offers casual elegance in atmosphere and menu items alike. Included among the discounted Happy Hour appetizers are a worthy plate of Gus's pretzels with a mustard sauce dosed with horseradish. Libations range from Busch beer to a pretty decent wine list. The house pours for happy hour get switched up, but they're not going to be the most refined wines around. Still, if your palate's not too picky, you won't mind.
Why You'll Go Back: With its saffron-yellow walls, wrought-iron furnishings and gorgeous patio, Sage makes you feel classier than most Soulard joints. And let's face it, every once in a while we're all struck with the urge to immerse ourselves in the je ne sais quoi of Soulard without a beer in our hand. that's when we head to Sage, where even the spinach-and-artichoke dip gets classed up, with roasted garlic and grilled pita.
The Verdict: Sage knows its place on Lynch Street. The restaurant offers bar-food favorites with sophisticated twists that aren't over-the-top, unpronounceable or unfriendly to the working-class appetite or wallet. Just because a Happy Hour has a refined air about it doesn't make it pretentious or unapproachable.
