St. Louis native Tiffany Glasco keeps exceedingly busy with her new business, even throughout the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Her service, however, includes a way to save consumers some legwork of their own. The phrase "Save time and avoid the lines," encapsulates the purpose behind Mercado on the Go, her new online-based grocery delivery store whose name comes from the Spanish word for "market."
"Let's face it. Gas isn't getting any cheaper and time is not getting any longer. I'd like for our customers to make the most out of their time and money while getting fresh, quality food at low prices," says Glasco, explaining that her service will provide groceries and prepared food items straight to doorsteps. The service appeals to a wide range of the population including the elderly, career-minded individuals and college students at a flat fee of $7.99 per residential delivery. A monthly subscription fee will also be available.
"Many college students attending local universities don't have a car, so they could just order groceries online and have them dropped off," says Glasco, adding that a discerning parent could even do the ordering for them.
The Mercado on the Go Web site includes a diverse selection of products grouped under the following categories: grocery, bakery, dairy, produce, meat, beverage, wine/spirits. There's also a specialty/catering selection offered through Mercado's "Meet the Chef" program, which provides hot homecooked meals for individuals or groups delivered to any address as far west as Wentzville and as far east as Edwardsville. Mercado also offers catering such as boxed lunches and platters, with a $15.99 flat delivery fee to all companies.
The menu of prepared meals includes everything from Cantonese beef ($10.99) and Caribbean chicken ($9.99) to miso glazed sea bass ($15.99) and shrimp scampi ($13.95). Glasco's personal favorites include a shrimp broccoli baked potato ($9.95) which is a meal on its own and dulce bread pudding ($6.95).
"I try to keep our menu as diverse and [with] as much variety as possible because that's what I like," says Glasco, who developed recipes for all the prepared dishes herself.
In addition to Mercado on the Go, Glasco also intends to open a restaurant featuring a chocolatery and wine bar called Café NU. It will fill the space formerly held by Nubia Cafe at 5860 Delmar Boulevard. Glasco says the cafe will bake its desserts from scratch in house and will offer a comfortable, intimate atmosphere appropriate for any occasion.
