Wednesday. Hump Day. Congrats, you've made it halfway through the work week! Unfortunately, you still have two days to go.
Dunno about you, but in order to survive the midweek blues, we're going to need a drink. Which brings us to our Wednesday Gut Check feature:
"Gut Check's Hump-Day Cocktail Suggestion"
Each week we take you to one of our favorite St. Louis bars (and, oh, the list is long) for a drink (or two) we -- in consultation with the bartender -- highly recommend.
This week, Gut Check recommends Three Kings Public House (6307 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-721-3355) in the Delmar Loop. Daytime bartender Holden Johnson has been bartending for just a year, and he's already a master mixologist. Look for him tomorrow at Iron Fork's mixology competition.
Though he can mix a complex, flavorful cocktail, his favorite thing to drink is a gin and tonic.
"I love gin," Johnson says. "I love everything about it. I'm an old man at heart."
When he wants to mix things up a bit, he orders a "Satan's Whiskers" -- a blend of sweet and dry vermouth, gin, fresh-squeezed orange juice and lemon juice and a splash of Cointreau. Today, though, he's mixing a springtime gin cocktail: Introducing the Pink Gin Julep. (We put our heads together for a while and that was the best name we could come up with. Johnson doesn't name cocktails. He drinks them.)
The Pink Gin Julep is a mixture of Bombay Sapphire gin, Chambord, club soda, pink lemonade and some muddled mint. It looks and tastes like spring. And now that the sun is out and the snow is melting, it's time to (finally) celebrate the change of season.
Johnson acknowledges that gin is often overpowering, so he adds Chambord to mask its strong, spicy flavor in this cocktail.
It totally works. The Pink Gin Julep has hints of juniper that are mellowed by the raspberry flavor of the Chambord. Add a little lemonade and mint, and you're instantly on a warm, sunny porch in Georgia, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and drinking with your slightly crazy great aunt Adelaide.
Or maybe that's just us.
