Earlier this week Gut Check sallied forth to Randall's Wines and Spirits (1910 S. Jefferson Avenue; 314-865-0199) and got our hands on a case of A-B's new Straw-Ber-Rita and a case of Bud Light Lime-A-Rita.
It was time for a taste test.
Here at Gut Check International Headquarters, we're accustomed to tasting booze. You know, American vodka or local moonshine, wine. Pretty much whatever we can rationalize putting on the ol' expense account or cadge from some unsuspecting distiller or distributor. Which is to say, this was by no means our first rodeo.
Opinions began popping with the top of the first Straw-Ber-Rita can. "That's an interesting aroma," mused one member of our tasting panel. "It smells like somebody had a blackout-drunk episode in Bath & Body Works: 'I was testing lotions, and next thing I knew, I was naked on the floor at 10 a.m.!'"
Others were more deliberate: "Ooooh, fruity!"
Then we tasted.
The first impressions were, shall we say, mixed. "It tastes like a Gusher. Or a Push Pop," mused one seasoned drinker/candy/quiesctently frozen-treat connoisseur. "Oh, God! Oh, no!" exclaimed another member of the panel.
A third: "This tastes like someone from Boone's Farm went on vacation to Mexico and came back with this crazy idea."
Others kinda liked the flavor. A little grudgingly, maybe -- is there a stigma to drinking an ersatz margarita, one that contains unspecified "flavors" and no tequila, out of a can? -- or maybe it was the 8 percent alcohol by volume that, well, grew on us.
"You know, the Straw-Ber-Rita makes the Lime-A-Rita taste a lot better," someone ventured.
Then Gut Check had an idea: What if we mix the two together?
