That's a spicy meat-a-ball! And do I detect a hint of listeria?
St. Louis-based P.E. & F. Inc. has recalled approximately 123 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat meatballs due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall on Thursday, but according to Nick Lamia, a representative for P.E. & F., the meatballs have been off of grocery store freezer shelves since Tuesday.
The meatballs in question are Fazio's fifteen-ounce packages, which are carried locally at Schnucks, Shop 'n Save and Dierbergs. P.E. & F. gets its meat from various companies across the country, so no single farm is to blame.
The issue was discovered during a routine inspection by FSIS, but P.E. & F. inadvertently failed to hold the product pending the results of the inspection. There have been no reports of illness associated with consumption of tainted Fazio's meatballs, and Lamia estimates that only twenty packages might have been sold before the recall was issued.
"Because we're a local company, we were able to get everything off the shelves pretty quickly," Lamia says.
The recall applies to packages with the lot code "041114," and the establishment number "EST. 13051" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The meatballs were produced on April 11, 2013.
