If you've ever eaten baby food, first of all, we sincerely hope you've had a baby, and second, you know it usually doesn't taste very good.
Chef Brian Miller of Onesto Pizza & Trattoria (5401 Finkman Street; 314-802-8883) wants to change that perception by teaching people how to make their own baby food. Spring brings bushels of fresh veggies to out local farmers' markets, and Onesto wants to take advantage of that fresh produce to show people that baby food doesn't have to be tasteless goop.
Four of Onesto's staff members are currently pregnant, and the general manager, Sally Sciaroni just had a baby in December, so the timing seems perfect for a baby food class. Gut Check caught up with Sciaroni to get all the details.
"Making your own baby food is great because it doesn't have all the preservatives," says Sciaroni, "plus the baby is getting what the food is going to taste like. For example, store-bought sweet potato food doesn't taste like sweet potatoes. It tastes like orange mush. If babies get used to the taste of actual food, they may be more likely to enjoy it in the future."
The class will take place on Saturday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Onesto. Chef Brian will hit up some farmers' markets a few days in a advance to see what looks fresh and would make good baby food, so the menu hasn't been determined yet.
Chef Brian will show both how to make baby food and how to store it, so busy moms and dads can make large batches and defrost small portions as needed. Sciaroni says guests are welcome to bring their own empty jars, but Chef Brian will probably be sending them home with pre-made samples.
