A couple of brand new south city food spots aim to open in the coming months. In the space formerly occupied by the Juice Box (3101 Arsenal Street), a gentleman named Barry Kinder works on the layout and plans for a corner grocery and cafe spot called Grove East Provisions.
Kinder teams up with local urban farms including the fledgling Brick City Farm across the street as well as an on-the-rise baking company called Red Fox Baking and Catering, which will soon produce artisan bread and pastries cooked in a hand-built brick oven to sell at the shop, farmers' markets and more. Look for an opening sometime this summer.

Not far from there, retired school teacher Richard Rodriguez begins work on another artisan-quality oven -- a wood-fired one for producing rustic, Neapolitan-style pizza in a new tavern concept for the Cherokee Street neighborhood called Yaquis (2628A Cherokee Street). Besides pizza, Yaquis also intends to offer a full wine bar, craft beer and tamales. The target opening is in November. More as we learn it.
