Les Misérables opens Sunday night at the Muny (Forest Park, 314-361-1900), and although the show is great (and Tony Award-winning), it's more than depressing. The musical's name kind of gives it away -- things aren't going to end well for Fantine and the gang. Perhaps to cheer everybody up, the Muny has paired with The Cup bakery (28 South Maryland Plaza, 314-367-6111) and Sub Zero Vodka Bar (308 North Euclid Avenue, 314-367-1200) for a Les Mis-inspired tasting event.

And what better to get your mind off the French tragedy than vodka and cupcakes? Taste Revolution is the third Sub Zero Vodka Bar and The Cup collaboration and pairs French-inspired cupcakes with complementary vodkas. That might sound like a strange marriage in itself, but Sub Zero does have over 500 kinds of vodka.
The "Mocha Cappucino" cupcake, one of the featured desserts due to its ties with French coffee, is good with Shpilka vodka and club soda. Another, the "Summer Crush" (The Cup's Jon Baker explains that it represents the Muny's sweltering summer season), pairs well with Absolut Mandarin and tonic.
Tonight, though, the cocktails are all Les Misérables-inspired. Sub Zero Vodka Bar chose classic French cocktails and gave them a twist; the French 75 is normally made with gin, but tonight they'll be using flavored vodka. Taste Revolution will be a bit more laid back than some of the pure vodka tastings at the Central West End hotspot. You'll leave with a belly full of cupcakes and the skills to make your own Les Mis drinks at home.
Tickets are $35 and are available at Sub Zero's website. Admission includes four cocktails and four cupcakes. Taste Revolution starts tonight at 6 p.m. at Sub Zero Vodka Bar.
