Mardi Gras is barely cold and we're already on to the next: St. Patrick's Day. Technically it's not until Monday, but we gotta bring home the bacon, so we'll be celebrating on Saturday. Spring is in full swing, too, though it doesn't officially start until March 20. Check out our favorite food-related recommendations for this weekend after the jump.
Friday (Mar. 14)
This fundraiser (obviously) supports the Salvation Army of St. Louis. You can dine in, carry out, or even get orders of eight or more delivered. Choose from Haitian Kreyol chicken, a chicken stew in a Kreyol sauce with bell peppers and onions; fried fish, battered fried tilapia served with fried plantains and pikliz; or a vegetarian plate of rice and beans, pikliz and fried plantains. Starts at noon. Regular plates are $10 each and the vegetarian plate is $8.
The restaurant at the Four Seasons is featuring artist Paul LeFlam for its public art show. LeFlam is a local artist who specializes in large scale, fluid one-shot expressionist paintings. Check out his work, grab a cocktail, and maybe it'll even be warm enough to enjoy the views on the rooftop patio. From 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free.
The quarterly event is celebrating Pi(e) Day, March 14. Peruse handmade, imported and locally sourced items and gift while sipping Skinnygirl wine and Pinnacle Vodka cocktails and enjoying some light bites. There will also be pizza and pie samples from local restaurants. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. $5 suggested donation goes to the Coolfire Foundation.
Saturday (Mar. 15)
Join the Precinct for a pre-parade Irish breakfast. Either pick three for $7.95 or five for $9.95: two eggs, bacon, smoked ham, hash browns, pancake small stack and two biscuits and gravy. From 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Two Soulard favorites are teaming up at the corner of Ninth Street and Geyer Avenue for a St. Patrick's Day celebration. Enjoy live music, Irish food and a pig roast, a Jameson tasting, giveaways, street vendors, shuttles to the parade and more. From 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $50, available here.
There aren't spring vegetables yet, but you can still get good produce at the winter farmers' market. Enjoy made-to-order omelets, pastries and coffee, plus vendors you love like EarthDance Farms, Sugar Creek Farm, Dietz Farm, Trail Lodge Tea, River to River Farm and more. From 9 a.m. to noon. Admission is free.
Celebrate St. Patrick's Day St. Louis-style before, during and after the parade. There will be Irish food, entertainment, drinks and more. Opens at 9 a.m. Admission is free.
The dinner and auction is helping the Volunteers in Mission team travel to Cookson Hills Center Mission in Oklahoma this May. Dinner includes spaghetti with red or white sauce, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door. $10 for kids. Call 314-647-1228.
Sunday (Mar. 16)
Chaumette is well-known for its Sunday suppers, but brunch service debuts today at the Grapevine Grill. Chef Adam Lambay will offer a different menu each week, plus staples like scrambled eggs, croissants and biscuits, sausage, and quiche. This week, Lambay gives a nod to St. Patrick with corned beef and cabbage, Yukon potato hash and sauteed leeks and carrots. Brunch is $20 per person, $10 for kids. Flying Saucer is celebrating its first year with special bottle releases throughout the day from all your favorite breweries, including 4 Hands, Perennial Boulevard, 2nd Shift, Deschutes and more. Plus all burgers are half price all day! There will also be live music from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. from Coconut Radio. From noon to 11 p.m. Admission is free.
