Boy, do we have it tough here at Gut Check. While others get to spend their days frolicking through cubicle farms or perusing TPS reports, we trudge into the office to do doughnut taste tests. Yes, it's a rough life, but we strongly feel that we owe it to the St. Louis doughnut-eating public to lead it in the direction of fried-dough bliss, and we're ready to declare a champion.
After two blind tastings featuring ten different shops, Pharoah's Donuts (200 North Seventh Street; 314-351-0285), a humble downtown shop that doesn't even have its own door, crushed the competition with its classic glazed. Both in texture and in taste, the Pharoah's glazed doughnut was the clear winner. The dough was a perfect mix of pouf and structure with a rich, yeasty taste. Its simple sugary glaze clung to the dough, forming a just-light-enough coating. There are no bells and whistles and no hype -- it's simply the Platonic form of doughnut.
Let the doughnut games begin.
