It's the first weekend in September, meaning two of our favorite events are finally here: Art Outside and the St. Louis Art Fair. It's also time for LouFest, and all three festivals have plenty of yummy local food for you to nosh while you're there. It's also Morgan Street Brewery's nineteenth birthday, and newcomer Baida's first. Check out our food-related recommendations after the jump.
Friday (Sept. 5):
"Ah, Schlafly's Art Outside -- is it an art fair, or the city's largest outdoor kibbutz? The annual weekend-long showplace for local artists working in all media always feels like a reunion. You walk the art fair ground with a cold beer in one paw and something tasty in the other, bumping into former neighbors, co-workers, the guy who towed the stalled car out of your driveway; everybody seems to show up at some point. Kids dance in front of the bandstand while you chat with the guy who makes lovely bowls, right next to booth full of handmade stuffed animals. It's weirdly, completely St. Louis at every level. This year's Art Outside takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, but you'll end up seeing something you didn't know you needed until it was right in front of you, so bring your wallet."
"The annual juried art show is in its twenty-first year, with all the usual fanfare. Several neighboring restaurants will be offering special food items as you walk around the Clayton business district. Grab eats from the Drunken Fish, Panorama, Wheelhouse, WildSmoke, Zia's on the Hill and more. Check out the full list of restaurants here. Admission is free. Friday, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit culturalfestivals.com for information on parking.
It's time for another food truck frenzy. The Steve Ewing Band will be playing from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and EdgeWild Winery will be serving wine and beer. There are fifteen trucks scheduled: Cheese Shack, Curbside Cookery, Destination Desserts, Holy Crepe!, Hot Aztec, Kona Ice, My Big Fat Greek Truck, Pie Oh My, Shell's Coastal Cuisine, Slice of the Hill, Steak Louie, the Sweet Divine, Wing Nutz, Yo Salsa and Vincent Van Doughnut. From 5 to 8 p.m. Admission is free.
Saturday (Sept. 6):
"After years of living in wine's shadow, never getting invited to fancy pairing dinners and rarely receiving any accolades or respect, beer has been having a moment for the past couple of years. If you haven't been part of the grape-free movement, know that it's OK to ditch the stemware every now and again, celebrate drink diversity and learn more about our fermented friend at events like the O'Fallon Global Brew Craft Beer Bash. This beer-stravaganza helps folks become acquainted with more than 40 beers from all over the world, as well as some specialty brews from Dogfish Head and other craft breweries. Food and live music round out the fun, and free admission makes the price just right -- but, of course, you should bring some cash for suds and snacks. Cheer on the Mizzou Tigers just like you did in college: with early-morning drinking. Mizzou vs. Toledo kicks off at 11 a.m., so hit the Wheelhouse in Clayton before the game for an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet, unlimited mimosas, bloody marys and domestic drafts. From 9 to 11 a.m. Tickets are $20 each, available here.
Baida, the yummy Moroccan restaurant on South Grand, has made it a whole year. Stop by and celebrate from 6 p.m. to close. Get a free appetizer with your meal, enjoy the anniversary special of lamb tajine with artichoke, green beans and green olives. There will also be belly dancing at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Reservations are required; call 314-932-7950.
Morgan Street Brewery is up for sale, so come celebrate nineteen years with the owners before they retire. Get unlimited tastings from over seventeen local breweries, including Square One, 2nd Shift, Kirkwood Station, Exit 6, Six Row, Crown Valley, Anheuser-Busch, 4 Hands, Alpha, Ferguson, Cathedral, Urban Chestnut, Trailhead, Charleville, Schlafly and Kraftig. You'll also get a commemorative tasting glass and enjoy live music from the Jeremiah Johnson Band. From noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door, available here.
The subtitle for this event is "A Fresh Air Celebration of Food and Wine." What could be better? Randall's has paired up with Cabela's for an end-of-summer bash. Sample more than 100 wines, beers and spirits, watch cooking demonstrations, shop a farmers' market and more. Demonstrations feature chefs from Annie Gunn's, Truffles, Lorusso's Cuinca, Mike Shannon's and Cielos. Annie Gunn's Lou Rook will also be signing copies of his book, Rook Cooks. There will also be a raffle and a special gift for the first 100 couples through the door. From noon to 6 p.m. Tickets are $3 per person and $5 per couple; proceeds benefit the Missouri Department of Conservation.
LouFest has some big-time headliners this year -- OutKast and the Arctic Monkeys -- but is it weird that we're more interested in the Nosh Pit? Some of St. Louis' best will be on hand to prove that festival food doesn't have to suck. Pick from Aya Sofia, Baileys' Range, Cleveland-Heath, Evangeline's, Flaming Gyros, Hot Wok Cafe, Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, Kaldi's Coffee, Kenrick's Meats & Catering, Kitchen Kulture, Mission Taco, Naked Bacon, PM BBQ, Smoothie King, Strange Donuts, Sugarfire Smokehouse, Tango Argentina and Triumph Grill.
