What began in 1986 as a single retro-kitsch burger joint on Melrose Avenue in LA has expanded into a mini-empire, with outposts in more than half of the 50 states. Johnny Rockets is kinda like Chicago's Ed Debevic's without the hand-jiving waitstaff. It’s a self-conscious throwback to halcyon days of nickel plays in the jukebox (still the price at Johnny Rockets!), servers in white hats and bow-tied uniforms and a 1950s-inspired menu of shakes, malts, patty melts, burgers, chili dogs and chocolate and vanilla sodas. Johnny Rockets sticks to a strict culinary repertoire that it knows how to cook. Everything’s well-rendered and tasty, from tuna melts to onion rings to hot fudge sundaes, and especially the baked-daily apple pie.
