Soulard's historic Soulard Farmers' Market has its roots way back in 1779 when farmers would gather in the area to sell and trade their wares. Today, the tradition continues, featuring everything from freshly fried mini donuts and perfumed soap to freshly butchered coon and locally-farmed produce. Open year round, the market's four wings and "Grand Hall" vary depending on the day and time you stop in. For the best bet and largest selection, head in early on a Saturday when it is at its busiest -- and don't forget to grab a bloody mary. Though if you wait until the last minute, you're likely to score some choice discounts for an entirely different experience.
Soulard Market is located in a "Grand Hall" built in the Italian Renaissance style with a central section for shops and four outer wings for vendor stalls. Though Fridays and Saturdays attract the biggest crowds and vendors, the market is open Wednesday - Saturday when vendors fill the open air market with fresh produce, meat, snacks, baked goods, spices, flowers and loads of other merchandise. The market has both free and metered parking plus a playground, park and plaza.
