The Bleeding Deacon

4123 Chippewa St.
St. Louis, MO 63116
314-772-1813
Website
It looks like any old south-side bar. A nondescript building sandwiched between a private residence and a sex shop, its interior is dim and smoky. But the brief menu contains plenty of surprises, from a salsa that features sweet potatoes and comes topped with flash-fried collard greens to maybe the best meatloaf in town, rich and tender and topped with a feisty bourbon ketchup. The fish and chips are typical of the Bleeding Decaon’s thoughtful approach: The fish is breaded in a black-and-tan beer batter, topped with fried capers and served with rémoulade and Strongbow cider malt vinegar, both made in-house.
